EPFC-workshop at EAS2023 in Vienna

On September 18, EPFC opened the EAS Congress in Vienna with a dynamic workshop that drew around 50 participants eager to learn about the latest developments in percid fish production. Highlights included Professor Dr. Pascal Fontaine (University of Lorraine) sharing how aquaponic plants can boost fish health, growth, and stress resistance through beneficial biomolecules, and an announcement from Fabiola Mustafaj (ASC) that pikeperch producers could achieve ASC certification as early as 2024.

Two Swiss companies also took the spotlight: Biononous introduced the AquaSorter, a device capable of automatically sorting fish eggs between 0.5 and 2 mm; and AKYmed, presented by David Nusbaumer, explained how they support fertility optimization, cryopreservation, and genetic diversity management in aquaculture. The workshop concluded with a project proposal by Stefan Teerlinck (Inagro) to develop a SNP low-density panel for Sander lucioperca, though funding remains a challenge.

Later that week, the EPFC Core Group hosted a well-attended dinner, growing from its usual 15 participants to a lively table of 35. This gathering provided ample opportunity for networking, project discussions, and planning future collaborations. EPFC extends gratitude to everyone who joined in Vienna and looks forward to seeing the community again at EAS2024 in Copenhagen.
