Egg and sperm donation for unmarried couples
January 31, 2025
Federal Councillor Elisabeth Baume-Schneider recently announced key points of a proposed revision to Switzerland’s Assisted Reproductive Medicine Act (PMA). Among the major changes is the proposal to legalize egg donation, as well as to grant both sperm and egg donation access to unmarried couples. The draft law is expected to enter a consultation phase by the end of 2026.
Currently, unmarried couples in Switzerland can access all assisted reproduction treatments except sperm donation, which is limited to married couples (both heterosexual and same-sex). By permitting egg donation, the new proposal aims to address the legal imbalance between men and women, while ensuring donor protections and safeguarding a child’s right to know their origins.
